· Placement: ne goes before the verb; the second part of the negative (pas, point, que, jamais, etc.) goes after the verb. EX: Je n’ai que cinq dollars.
· For compound verb tenses (such as the passé composé), the negative parts surround the helping verb (avoir or être). EX: Je n’ai jamais vu ce film.
o Exception: nulle part: the second part of the negative comes after the main verb. EX: Je n’ai vu nulle part mon ami.
o Exception: ne...que: the “que” goes before the word it is describing: EX: Je ne mange que des pommes rouges. I only eat red apples.
EX: Je ne mange des pommes que pour le déjeuner. I only eat apples for lunch.
